Colombia occupies one of the most seismically complex corners of South America, sitting at the junction where the Nazca Plate, Caribbean Plate, and South American Plate all converge within its territory. The Pacific coast faces the ongoing subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate along the Colombia-Ecuador Trench — a source of large interplate earthquakes and [[tsunami]] hazard for the Pacific lowlands. Along the Caribbean coast and offshore, the Caribbean Plate moves eastward relative to South American along a poorly constrained boundary of oblique convergence that generates seismicity in northern Colombia and the Venezuelan borderlands. The Andes — which in Colombia split into three parallel cordilleras — host numerous active volcanoes and intracordilleran thrust faults that generate destructive crustal earthquakes under and near major cities. Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, and Manizales all sit in seismically active highland zones. The Romeral Fault System, running the length of the central Cordillera, is a major active structure dividing the Pacific margin accreted terranes from the older South American continental crust and is one of the country's principal seismic sources. The complex geometry of multiple converging plates, active volcanism, and densely populated mountain terrain creates a seismic risk profile that spans virtually the entire country.
Colombia's earthquake history includes multiple catastrophic events in its urban highland zones. The 25 January 1999 Armenia earthquake (magnitude 6.1) struck the coffee-growing Quindío department, killing 1,185 people, injuring over 5,000, and destroying more than 60 percent of buildings in Armenia and surrounding towns; the relatively modest [[magnitude]] caused enormous losses because of shallow depth (close [[epicenter]] to population centres) and the poor seismic resistance of typical construction in the region. The 12 December 1979 Tumaco earthquake (magnitude 7.9) generated a [[tsunami]] that struck the Pacific coast, killing approximately 259 people in coastal communities. The 9 February 1967 Huila earthquake (magnitude 6.8) killed 98 people. The 31 January 1906 Ecuador-Colombia earthquake (magnitude 8.5–8.8) is one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded and generated a [[tsunami]] that killed over 1,000 people along the Colombia-Ecuador Pacific coast; its rupture zone extended from southern Colombia through Ecuador. The Cauca-Patía Valley and the coffee-growing regions of the central Andes have been struck repeatedly by significant earthquakes in the historical record, including events in 1962, 1962, 1983, and the 1999 Armenia disaster. The volcanic chain includes active or recently active volcanoes including Nevado del Ruiz, Galeras, and Nevado del Huila, which generate volcano-tectonic earthquake swarms and represent additional hazards.
Colombia's tectonic setting reflects the progressive accretion of oceanic terranes — including oceanic plateau material derived from the Caribbean Large Igneous Province — onto the northwestern margin of the South American continent during the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene. The western Cordillera and the coastal ranges are built on this accreted oceanic material; the central and eastern Cordillera expose older Precambrian and Paleozoic South American continental basement, deformed and uplifted by Andean shortening. The segmented nature of the Andes in Colombia, with three distinct ranges separated by deep intermontane valleys, reflects the geometry of the crustal collision and thrust belt architecture. The Romeral Fault System marks the boundary between accreted Pacific terranes to the west and the South American craton to the east and has generated multiple historical destructive earthquakes. [[aftershock]] sequences in Colombia's highlands can be prolonged and damaging given the vulnerability of existing construction; the 1999 Armenia sequence included M5+ events for several weeks. Colombia's National Seismological Network (RSNC), operated by the SGC (Colombian Geological Survey), provides real-time monitoring and participates in regional [[tsunami]] warning systems for the Pacific coast.
