Cyprus sits at the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean, positioned at the junction of three tectonic plates: the African Plate, the Eurasian Plate, and the Anatolian Plate. The island lies just north of the Cyprus Arc, a zone of active [[subduction-zone]] where the African oceanic lithosphere is descending northward beneath the Anatolian and Eurasian plates. This subduction creates the seismic activity that affects Cyprus, with the most significant earthquake sources lying offshore to the south and southwest. The East Anatolian Fault zone approaches the eastern Mediterranean not far from Cyprus, contributing to the complex stress field around the island. On land, the Troodos massif represents an ophiolite — a fragment of ancient oceanic crust uplifted during earlier phases of the African-Eurasian collision — but active faults within Cyprus itself also contribute to local seismicity.
Cyprus has experienced numerous destructive earthquakes in its long inhabited history. Ancient sources describe repeated devastation of Paphos, Salamis, and other cities. The earthquake of 77 AD reportedly destroyed Paphos completely. In 1222, a large earthquake estimated at magnitude 7.5 caused severe damage across the island. The most significant modern event was the 1953 Paphos earthquake (magnitude 6.2), which caused casualties and building damage in western Cyprus. A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck offshore in 1996, causing damage in Limassol and Paphos districts. The 1999 Izmit earthquake in Turkey (magnitude 7.6), though centred far to the north, was felt strongly in Cyprus, demonstrating the regional connectivity of the seismic risk.
The tectonic setting of Cyprus reflects a long history of Tethyan ocean closure. The Troodos ophiolite was obducted onto the continental margin during the Late Cretaceous, and subsequent collision has complicated the local tectonics. The present-day Cyprus Arc represents the active subduction front where African oceanic crust descends to the north, generating [[seismic-wave]]s that can be felt across the island. The convergence rate across the Cyprus Arc is estimated at 5–10 millimetres per year. The stress interaction between the Cyprus Arc subduction, the East Anatolian Fault transform system, and the Dead Sea Transform to the east creates a tectonically complex region. Seismic hazard in Cyprus is moderate to high by European standards, with the greatest risk concentrated in western and southern coastal areas closest to the subduction front.

Cyprus has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 9 earthquakes have been recorded in Cyprus's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Cyprus had a magnitude of 5.1. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Cyprus has had 9 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Cyprus is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.

Cyprus
