Vatican City, the world's smallest sovereign state, occupies a small area on the right bank of the Tiber River in Rome. It has no independent seismic character but shares fully in the moderate seismic hazard of the Rome metropolitan area and the broader Central Apennine region. Rome lies approximately 100 km from the most active Apennine normal [[fault]] systems (the Fucino and Campo Felice–Ovindoli zones), which have generated destructive historical earthquakes including the 1915 Avezzano event (M 7.0, ~30,000 deaths). The alluvial sediments of the Tiber valley underlying parts of Rome — and Vatican City — are known to amplify [[seismic-wave|seismic waves]], increasing local [[intensity|ground motion]] relative to the surrounding hills.

Vatican City's historical buildings — St. Peter's Basilica, the Apostolic Palace, the Vatican Museums — represent irreplaceable architectural and artistic heritage that would be at risk in a major Central Apennine earthquake. The Holy See applies Italian national seismic building standards (NTC 2018) to new construction and has engaged in structural assessment programs for its historic patrimony. From a hazard standpoint, the Vatican is covered by the same probabilistic seismic hazard assessment that governs Rome's design code, which accounts for contributions from the Apennine fault systems at intermediate distances and from any rare near-surface faults that may underlie the Tiber valley itself. The [[magnitude]] 5+ Roman area earthquake of 1703 caused damage to buildings across central Italy including Rome, and provides a reminder that the capital's seismic exposure is real if intermittent.

Vatican City has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 3 earthquakes have been recorded in Vatican City's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Vatican City had a magnitude of 6.0. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Vatican City has had 3 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Vatican City is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
