Kuwait occupies a position on the northeastern margin of the Arabian Peninsula, at the head of the Persian Gulf. Like Bahrain and the UAE, Kuwait sits on the stable interior of the Arabian Plate, well removed from the active deformation occurring at the plate margins — the Zagros fold belt in Iran to the northeast and the Red Sea spreading centre to the southwest. The seismic hazard in Kuwait is consequently very low. Minor seismicity associated with faulting in the northern Gulf region and in the Zagros foothills of Iraq and Iran occasionally generates [[seismic-wave]]s felt in Kuwait City, but these are typically low-intensity events causing no damage.

Kuwait's historical seismic record contains no major destructive earthquakes. The country's flat topography, underlain by gently dipping Tertiary sedimentary rocks and surficial gravels and sands, reflects the stable cratonic platform geology. Occasional tremors felt by residents are invariably traced to distant sources in Iran or to minor seismicity in the Gulf itself. The Persian Gulf has some offshore fault activity related to the far-field effects of the Zagros orogeny, and these can produce small to moderate earthquakes, but the epicentres are typically distant enough from Kuwait's coastline that felt [[intensity]] is low.

The geological foundation of Kuwait consists of flat-lying Tertiary limestone, sandstone, and marl overlying the ancient Arabian craton basement. The gentle anticlines that trap Kuwait's vast oil reserves are structural features related to ancient tectonic activity, not to any current deformation. Kuwait's primary seismic concern would be strong [[seismic-wave]]s generated by a large (magnitude 7+) earthquake in the Zagros belt being felt in Kuwait City, but the probability of structural damage is very low given the distance and the attenuating path across the stable platform. Emergency planning in Kuwait appropriately focuses on other natural and industrial hazards rather than earthquakes.
