Macau is a Special Administrative Region of China on the western bank of the Pearl River estuary, adjacent to Guangdong Province and approximately 60 kilometres west of Hong Kong. Like Hong Kong, Macau sits within the broad southeastern China seismic province and is subject to low-to-moderate seismic hazard from the same regional tectonic drivers — principally far-field stress from the India-Eurasia collision and local reactivation of old continental margin faults. The territory is built on a combination of granitic bedrock peninsulas and extensively reclaimed land, the latter comprising a significant proportion of modern Macau's area following decades of land reclamation into the Pearl River delta and adjacent waters.
Reclaimed land in Macau is a particular concern for seismic hazard because it typically consists of hydraulically placed sand and marine sediments with high water content and low density — ideal conditions for [[liquefaction]] during earthquake shaking. While the probability of a damaging earthquake directly beneath Macau is low, even a moderate offshore event of magnitude 5 to 6 could trigger [[liquefaction]] in reclaimed areas, potentially causing differential settlement and structural damage. The 1874 earthquake felt strongly in nearby Hong Kong was also felt in Macau. Modern construction in Macau's casino and hotel district follows building codes that account for seismic loading, though many older structures in the historic quarter were built without seismic provisions.
The offshore South China Sea to the south of Macau is crossed by east-west trending extensional [[fault]]s that mark the passive margin transition from continental to oceanic crust. These faults occasionally generate low-to-moderate seismicity detectable by the regional network. No destructive earthquake has been recorded in Macau's documented history, and the territory's seismic hazard is classified as low to moderate by Chinese national standards. Macau participates in the Pearl River Delta regional seismic monitoring cooperative.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Macau
Macau has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Macau's seismic history.
Macau has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Macau is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Asia. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
