Mauritius is a small volcanic island in the western Indian Ocean, located approximately 900 kilometres east of Madagascar. The island was formed by a mantle hotspot — the same hotspot that created the Réunion Island to the southwest and a chain of seamounts extending northward. Mauritius itself is geologically old relative to its hotspot sibling Réunion; the main shield volcano of Mauritius became extinct approximately 8 million years ago, though younger volcanic activity has continued in some parts of the island.
Because Mauritius is an ancient oceanic island and the underlying hotspot has shifted to Réunion to the southwest, the island itself is seismically quiet by volcanic island standards. No eruption has occurred on Mauritius in recorded human history. Occasional low-magnitude [[seismic-wave]] events are detected, likely associated with residual cooling and contraction of the old volcanic edifice or with the broader Indian Ocean plate stress field.
The Indian Ocean plate in which Mauritius sits is tectonically active at its boundaries — particularly at the Carlsberg Ridge to the north and the Rodrigues Triple Junction to the southeast — but these boundaries are distant enough that their seismicity rarely affects Mauritius perceptibly. The [[magnitude]] events felt on the island are typically micro-earthquakes or the tremors of distant moderate events transmitted through the oceanic crust.
The most significant seismic threat to Mauritius is not local earthquake activity but the distant-source [[tsunami]] hazard. A large subduction zone earthquake along the Sunda Arc or Macquarie-Tonga system could potentially generate tsunami waves that would reach Mauritius. The devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, though centred far to the northeast, produced minor wave anomalies near Mauritius. The country's low elevation in coastal areas makes tsunami preparedness a relevant concern despite the very low local seismicity.
