Saint Helena, Ascension Island, and Tristan da Cunha form a British Overseas Territory scattered across the South Atlantic Ocean. Each island is a volcanic edifice sitting on or near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge system — the divergent plate boundary where the South American Plate and the African Plate are moving apart at approximately 25 to 30 millimetres per year. Ascension Island sits directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and is volcanically young, with its most recent volcanic activity occurring within the past 1,000 years. Tristan da Cunha, approximately 2,800 kilometres south of Saint Helena, is the most volcanically and seismically active of the three: it sits above the Tristan da Cunha hotspot and erupted in 1961, forcing the evacuation of the entire population of 264 people to Britain before they returned in 1963.
Seismicity across the territory is concentrated along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and associated transform [[fault]]s, which produce moderate-magnitude strike-slip earthquakes. The ridge axis generates continuous low-to-moderate seismicity from magmatic intrusions and normal [[fault]]ing as the plates spread apart. Tristan da Cunha experiences both rift-related tectonic earthquakes and volcano-tectonic [[seismic-wave]] swarms associated with its active magmatic system. Saint Helena, which sits some distance east of the active ridge on the African Plate, is an older eroded volcanic island and experiences minimal seismicity.
The [[tsunami]] hazard across the territory is low to moderate. Ridge-related earthquakes rarely generate tsunamis because normal and strike-slip faulting on mid-ocean ridges produces less vertical seafloor displacement than subduction-zone events. However, a large flank collapse from Tristan da Cunha or another ridge volcano could theoretically generate a locally damaging wave. The population of Saint Helena (approximately 4,500) and Tristan da Cunha (approximately 250) is small, and both communities maintain awareness of volcanic and seismic monitoring through the British Geological Survey and local observatories.
