North Korea occupies the Korean Peninsula, which sits on the eastern edge of the Eurasian Plate and is influenced by the subduction of the Pacific Plate along the Japan Trench to the east. The peninsula itself is underlain by stable Precambrian basement — the Sino-Korean craton — that has not been deformed by active collision for hundreds of millions of years. The seismic hazard in North Korea is generally low to moderate, comparable to South Korea. The principal seismogenic structures are intraplate reactivated basement faults, including the Chungyang-Yesong Fault system and the Pyongyang Fold Belt structures. The proximity of the Japan Trench and the Sea of Japan back-arc basin creates a backdrop of distant seismicity that occasionally produces felt [[seismic-wave]]s on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea's seismic record is complicated by the country's international isolation and the additional seismic signals produced by its nuclear weapons testing programme. The detection of underground nuclear tests — designated "artificial earthquakes" by monitoring agencies — at the Punggye-ri test site has generated substantial seismic data since 2006. These are distinct from natural tectonic earthquakes. Natural seismicity in North Korea includes the 1952 Sariwon earthquake (magnitude 6.2) and occasional moderate events in the vicinity of Pyongyang and along the western coast. The Korean Peninsula experienced destructive earthquakes in historical times, including accounts of major events in 779 AD and 1681 AD, but the modern instrumental record shows relatively low seismicity by Asian standards.

The tectonic context of North Korean seismicity places it within the broader East Asian intraplate deformation zone. The far-field stresses transmitted from the Pacific subduction system and from the Tibet collision are diffuse by the time they reach the Korean Peninsula, resulting in lower strain rates than in adjacent Japan or eastern China. The Sino-Korean craton is a thick, cold, strong lithospheric block that resists deformation. However, ancient suture zones and Mesozoic extensional faults within the craton represent zones of weakness that can be reactivated under low levels of tectonic stress. The [[epicenter]] distribution of Korean natural earthquakes traces these ancient structural trends. The Yellow Sea between Korea and China also has some seismicity from offshore fault systems.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in North Korea

North Korea has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in North Korea's seismic history.

North Korea has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

North Korea is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Asia. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.

North Korea
