Palau sits at the western end of the Caroline Islands, in a geologically complex zone where the Philippine Sea Plate to the north meets the Caroline microplate and where the Palau Trench to the west represents an older, partly inactive [[subduction-zone]] structure. The Palau Trench — one of the deepest parts of the western Pacific at approximately 8,000 metres — marks the former subduction boundary between the Pacific and Philippine Sea plates and now represents a passive tectonic boundary with reduced but not absent seismicity. Active seismicity is generated by residual motion along the Palau Kyushu Ridge system and from nearby active [[subduction-zone]]s in the Philippines and Mariana arcs. Palau's main islands are of volcanic origin and sit on the remnant arc structure of the old Palau-Kyushu Ridge. The western Pacific subduction system that includes the Mariana [[subduction-zone]] approximately 800 kilometres to the northeast generates occasional felt events in Palau from both interface and intraslab sources.

Historical earthquake records for Palau are limited but include several notable events. The region experienced significant seismicity associated with World War II military activities and post-war testing that complicates the natural seismic record. The 2010 Palau earthquake (magnitude 5.8) caused felt shaking across the main island group. Events from the Philippine subduction system periodically produce felt motion in Palau. The 2004 Indian Ocean [[tsunami]] had a minor impact on Palau. Regional events from the Mindanao and Halmahera seismic zones are occasionally felt in western Palau. The relatively low population density and the structural robustness of modern hotel and government buildings compared to traditional materials means that most felt events cause limited damage. [[tsunami]] preparedness is maintained through Palau's participation in Pacific warning systems.

Palau's geological heritage reflects the evolution of the western Pacific arc system over the past 60 million years. The Rock Islands — the famous turquoise-water limestone formations — are marine carbonate rocks deposited on the volcanic arc platform during periods of relative tectonic quiescence and subsequently uplifted by arc reactivation. The main volcanic islands including Babeldaob are composed of Eocene to Oligocene volcanic and sedimentary rocks from the old arc system. The transition from the active western Pacific convergent zone to the relatively inactive current setting occurred roughly 30 million years ago when the Palau-Kyushu Ridge ceased active subduction as the plate boundary geometry evolved. Palau currently sits in a relatively protected tectonic position compared to its neighbours in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, but the history of the region's [[subduction-zone]] evolution means that residual tectonic activity continues.

Palau has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 51 earthquakes have been recorded in Palau's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Palau had a magnitude of 6.0. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Palau has had 51 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Palau is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Oceania. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
