Vanuatu is one of the most seismically active island nations on Earth, a direct consequence of its position atop the New Hebrides [[subduction-zone]] where the Australian Plate dives eastward beneath the Pacific Plate at a rate of 90 to 100 millimetres per year — among the world's fastest subduction rates. This rapid convergence generates a near-continuous stream of earthquakes across the island chain, ranging from micro-events to great interface earthquakes exceeding magnitude 8. The New Hebrides Trench lies approximately 100 to 200 kilometres to the west of the main island chain, and the subducting Australian plate descends steeply to depths of over 600 kilometres beneath the arc. Along the arc's length, the nature of the seismic coupling varies: the central portion around Vanuatu's main islands appears more strongly locked and has produced multiple magnitude 7+ events, while the northern and southern terminations of the arc have somewhat different geometries. Active volcanoes including Yasur on Tanna, Ambrym, Lopevi, Ambae (Manaro Voui), and multiple submarine cones mark the volcanic arc built above the [[subduction-zone]]. The combination of large interface earthquakes and locally generated [[tsunami]]s makes Vanuatu one of the highest-risk countries in the Pacific for compound seismic-tsunamic disasters.

Vanuatu's seismic history is dominated by large and frequently destructive earthquakes. The 26 January 1965 Banks Islands earthquake (magnitude 7.6) generated a [[tsunami]] that killed approximately 100 people. The 5 August 1980 Vanuatu earthquake (magnitude 7.1) struck near the capital Port Vila. The 7 October 1999 Ambrym earthquake (magnitude 7.3) caused widespread damage on the volcanic island. On 25 September 2011, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near Efate, the main island, causing significant damage to Port Vila buildings. The 7 March 2015 Vanuatu earthquake (magnitude 6.9) struck just hours before Cyclone Pam, one of the strongest Pacific cyclones on record, creating compound disaster conditions that overwhelmed emergency response. The 14 November 1999 Vanuatu earthquake (magnitude 7.5) north of Espiritu Santo generated a destructive [[tsunami]] that struck Pentecost Island. Multiple magnitude 7+ events struck in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016, and subsequent years, reflecting the nearly annual occurrence of major earthquakes somewhere along the New Hebrides arc. The 2021 Ambrym volcanic eruption was preceded by a swarm of seismic events associated with the magmatic system.

The tectonic origin of Vanuatu is entirely oceanic and volcanic. The islands have no continental basement; they sit on accreted oceanic plateau and arc material that was built up by submarine volcanism over tens of millions of years. The d'Entrecasteaux Ridge — an oceanic ridge on the subducting Australian Plate — is currently colliding with the central New Hebrides arc, causing local tectonic complexity, uplift of islands, and modification of the [[subduction-zone]] geometry in the central arc region. This ridge-arc collision is responsible for unusual tectonic behaviour including back-arc compression in the North Aoba Basin and anomalously shallow seismicity in the arc-ridge collision zone. The outer forearc islands — notably the Loyalty Islands to the west, geologically part of New Caledonia's administrative territory — have been uplifted by forearc deformation associated with the ridge collision. The volcanic arc is highly active: Yasur on Tanna has been erupting nearly continuously for at least 800 years, and Ambrym has one of the world's largest active lava lakes. [[seismic-wave]] amplification in coastal Port Vila, built partly on young alluvial and reclaimed land, is a recognised urban hazard that has been the subject of microzonation studies.

Vanuatu is located in a very high seismic risk zone, meaning earthquakes are frequent and can be destructive. A total of 39 earthquakes have been recorded in Vanuatu's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Vanuatu had a magnitude of 7.3. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Vanuatu has had 39 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Vanuatu is classified in the "Very High" seismic zone, located in Oceania. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
