Germany's seismicity is generally low but geographically focused on several identifiable source zones. The most significant is the Lower Rhine Embayment (Roer Valley Graben) in the northwest, where NW-trending normal [[fault]] systems have generated the country's strongest historical earthquakes. A second zone extends along the Upper Rhine Graben from Basel northward through Freiburg and Mannheim — this is the German segment of the European Cenozoic Rift System, an active extensional province. The Swabian Alb in Baden-Württemberg shows diffuse seismicity from basement faults, and the Vogtland region of Saxony shares the earthquake swarm phenomenon of western Bohemia. In contrast, northern Germany — the North German lowlands — is essentially aseismic.
The strongest German earthquake in the historical record was the 1356 Basel earthquake (M estimated 6.9), centered at the southern tip of the Rhine Graben in what is today Switzerland but causing severe damage throughout the Upper Rhine region including the German side. In the Roer Valley Graben, the 1756 Düren earthquake (M ~6.0) was the most damaging event in recent centuries, causing casualties and widespread structural damage in the Aachen–Cologne region. The 1978 Swabian Alb earthquake (ML 5.7) near Albstadt was the most damaging post-WWII German event, causing considerable damage to masonry buildings. Induced seismicity from mining — particularly potash and coal mining in Saxony and the Ruhr — adds a separate category of seismic events to the German catalog.
The tectonic context of German seismicity involves far-field transmission of Alpine compressional stresses northward into the foreland, reactivating Variscan basement [[fault]] structures. The Rhine Graben system represents a failed Cenozoic rift arm — related to the East African Rift system as part of a broad African–Eurasian divergence — where ongoing extension at approximately 0.5–1 mm/year maintains seismic activity. Germany applies Eurocode 8 seismic design provisions, with design accelerations highest along the Rhine Graben and in the Lower Rhine Embayment. The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) coordinates national seismic monitoring.

Germany has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Germany's seismic history.
Germany has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Germany is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
