Hungary lies within the Pannonian Basin, a back-arc extensional province that developed during the Miocene as the Carpathian thrust belt migrated outward and the basin interior subsided. Today the basin is largely inactive tectonically, but its bounding fault systems and some intra-basin structures retain seismic potential, producing moderate but occasionally damaging earthquakes. The most seismically active zones are along the Great Hungarian Plain toward the southeast (the Szerémség and Mórahalom regions), the Eger–Bükk area in the north, and the Mór-Dunaföldvár zone in the Transdanubian region. Most Hungarian earthquakes are shallow (less than 20 km depth) and rarely exceed [[magnitude]] 5.
Hungary's largest historical earthquake occurred on 28 June 1763 in Komárom (modern Komárno, now on the Slovak side of the Danube), with an estimated [[magnitude]] of ~6.0–6.3. It destroyed most of the town, killed several people, and was felt across a large part of central Europe. The 1956 Dunaharaszti earthquake (M 5.6) near Budapest caused structural damage in the capital's southern suburbs. The 1985 Berhida earthquake (M 5.2) in the Veszprém County area was another significant recent event. Smaller damaging events in the Mórahalom area in 1983 and in Eger in various years highlight that earthquake risk extends beyond the main Transdanubian zone.
The tectonic setting of Hungarian seismicity is governed by the stress regime inherited from Pannonian Basin formation and modified by ongoing convergence between the Adriatic microplate and Eurasia to the west and south. While extension has largely ceased, compressional stresses transmitted from the Alps and Dinarides continue to load inherited [[fault]] systems. GPS measurements indicate that Hungary as a whole moves at very low velocities relative to the Eurasian plate, but local deformation along active faults can still accumulate sufficient stress for M 5–6 events over century-scale recurrence intervals. Hungary applies Eurocode 8 seismic provisions, with the highest design acceleration values in the Transdanubian and Szerémség zones.

Hungary has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Hungary's seismic history.
Hungary has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Hungary is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
