Bhutan
Bhutan lies directly on the collision front between the Indian Plate and Asia, positioned along the southern flank of the High Himalayas. The country straddles some of the world's most active thrust fault systems. The Main Frontal Thrust (MFT) marks the active southern deformation front of the Himalayan orogen and passes through Bhutan's southern foothills. Above it, the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) and Main Central Thrust (MCT) are older but still active fault systems that produced the high ranges. The Indian Plate is being subducted northward beneath Asia at roughly 45–50 millimetres per year, building up enormous elastic strain that is periodically released in major earthquakes. GPS surveys show that portions of the Bhutan Himalaya are currently in an interseismic locking phase, accumulating strain that must eventually be released.
Bhutan's seismic history includes major damaging events, though the country's sparse population has limited casualty records. The 1714 Bhutan earthquake is estimated at magnitude 7.5–8.0 and caused widespread destruction of dzongs and villages across the country. The 1934 Bihar-Nepal earthquake (magnitude 8.2) was felt strongly across Bhutan. In 2009, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck western Bhutan near Wangdue Phodrang, causing damage to buildings and infrastructure. The geological record preserved in river terraces and fault scarps reveals evidence of multiple prehistoric great earthquakes along the MFT, suggesting recurrence intervals of several centuries to a millennium for events exceeding magnitude 8.0.
The tectonic context of Bhutan's seismicity involves the full complexity of the Himalayan collision system. Bhutan occupies the eastern syntaxis region where the Himalayan arc begins to curve sharply, creating a distinct stress regime compared to the central Himalaya. The deep crustal structure shows the Indian Plate underthrusting northward beneath the Tibetan Plateau at a relatively shallow angle in the Bhutan region — a geometry that locks a large area of fault surface between the overriding and underthrusting plates. This locked patch stores elastic energy for centuries before catastrophic [[fault]] slip. The [[epicenter]] locations of historical and instrumental earthquakes trace the geometry of this collision system clearly. The threat of a future great earthquake, potentially exceeding magnitude 8.5, affecting Bhutan and adjacent regions is a central concern for regional disaster preparedness.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
Bhutan has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 8 earthquakes have been recorded in Bhutan's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Bhutan had a magnitude of 4.8. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Bhutan has had 8 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Bhutan is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Asia. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
