Chile holds the distinction of hosting the largest earthquake ever recorded by seismometers anywhere on Earth — a title that reflects its position at one of the world's most geologically active [[subduction-zone]] boundaries. The Nazca Plate dives beneath the South American Plate along the Peru-Chile Trench at roughly 6.5 to 7.5 centimetres per year along Chile's length, a process that has been ongoing for tens of millions of years and has built the Andes mountain chain — the world's longest continental mountain belt — through crustal thickening and magmatic addition. The trench runs for over 4,000 kilometres parallel to Chile's Pacific coast, lying at depths exceeding 8,000 metres in some sections. Along this enormous boundary, different segments lock and unlock asynchronously, accumulating decades to centuries of elastic strain before releasing it catastrophically. The seismic hazard is virtually uniform along Chile's length, from the driest Atacama Desert in the north to the glaciated fjords of Patagonia in the south, with every major city sitting within reach of a repeat of a great subduction earthquake. The Andes also contain over 90 active or potentially active volcanoes, adding volcanic-tectonic seismicity to the subduction hazard. Inland, back-arc thrust faults beneath the Argentine Precordillera and extensional faults within the arc further diversify the earthquake source distribution.
The 22 May 1960 Valdivia earthquake (magnitude 9.5) is the largest earthquake ever recorded and remains the benchmark against which all subsequent great earthquakes are measured. The rupture extended approximately 1,000 kilometres along the [[subduction-zone]] interface off central-southern Chile, releasing energy equivalent to 25,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs. The immediate shaking killed approximately 1,000–2,000 people, but the [[tsunami]] it generated — reaching heights of up to 25 metres on the Chilean coast — killed thousands more locally and propagated across the Pacific, killing 61 people in Hawaii, 138 in Japan, and 32 in the Philippines. The [[aftershock]] sequence included a magnitude 8.0 event the following day. Earlier, the 9 May 1877 Iquique earthquake (magnitude 8.8) generated a [[tsunami]] that killed hundreds along the northern Chilean coast and caused damage from Patagonia to New Zealand. The 3 March 1985 Algarrobo earthquake (magnitude 7.8) caused significant damage in Santiago. The 27 February 2010 Maule earthquake (magnitude 8.8) killed 525 people, destroyed 220,000 homes, and generated a [[tsunami]] that reached Concepción harbour and Constitución at heights up to 12 metres; a failure of the [[early-warning]] system contributed to preventable deaths in coastal towns. The 1 April 2014 Iquique earthquake (magnitude 8.2) and 16 September 2015 Illapel earthquake (magnitude 8.3) generated further tsunamis and [[aftershock]] sequences affecting northern and central Chile. The 2010 earthquake prompted major reforms to Chile's tsunami warning system, building code enforcement, and coastal land-use planning.
The tectonic engine driving Chile's seismicity is the subduction of Nazca oceanic crust, formed at the East Pacific Rise and progressively consumed at the Peru-Chile Trench. The subduction geometry varies along strike: in central Chile, the Nazca Plate subducts at a shallow angle (flat-slab subduction) beneath the Pampean region of Argentina, suppressing the volcanic arc over that stretch but transmitting seismic stress deep into the South American interior. In northern Chile, normal-angle subduction produces the active volcanic arc of the central Andes and concentrates seismicity in the locked zone between 10 and 50 kilometres depth. The [[subduction-zone]] coupling — the degree to which the plates are locked together — has been mapped using GPS and InSAR measurements, identifying high-coupling patches where the most dangerous future ruptures are expected. The Atacama Giant of northern Chile, defined by several centuries of geodetic and geological observation, is a candidate for a magnitude 8.5+ event that has not ruptured in historical time. Chile's National Seismological Centre (CSN) operates the densest seismological network in South America, and the SHOA naval hydrographic service provides [[tsunami]] warning for the Pacific coast.
