Tinjauan Seismik
Burundi is one of the smaller countries in central Africa, but its seismic exposure is significant because it straddles the western branch of the East African Rift System. Lake Tanganyika, which forms Burundi's western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, occupies one of the deepest rift-valley lakes on Earth, sitting in a graben bounded by active normal [[fault]]s that have been extending the crust for roughly 12 million years. These faults generate moderate-to-large earthquakes capable of causing damage in the country's densely populated lakeside areas.
The [[epicenter]]s of most Burundian earthquakes cluster along the margins of Lake Tanganyika and in the hills immediately east of the lake. The Tanganyika Rift basin has produced several magnitude 5.5 to 6.5 events in the 20th and 21st centuries. On 30 August 2024, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck near the northern end of Lake Tanganyika close to Bujumbura, damaging buildings in the capital and killing several people. Earthquakes in this zone can also trigger underwater landslides on the steep lacustrine slopes, which in turn can generate localised [[tsunami]]-like waves within the lake — a hazard known as a seiche or impulse wave.
Historically, Burundi's seismic record is intertwined with that of the wider Lake Tanganyika region. A magnitude 6.2 earthquake in 1903 caused damage around the northern lake shore. A sequence of events in 1919 and 1920 also produced moderate shaking across the region. Because Burundi is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa with widespread informal construction, the exposure of the population to seismic hazard is high relative to the moderate level of ground shaking expected.
The tectonic framework of Burundi involves the slow separation of the Nubian plate to the west from the Somalian plate to the east along the western rift branch. Extension rates in the Tanganyika Rift are estimated at two to four millimetres per year. The rift valley is characterised by half-graben basins bounded by major border faults on alternating sides of the valley. [[seismic-wave]] studies of local events show predominantly normal-faulting mechanisms consistent with this extensional setting. The thick sedimentary fill within Lake Tanganyika provides a long archive of past earthquake activity detectable through sub-bottom seismic profiling.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Burundi
Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan
Burundi has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 2 earthquakes have been recorded in Burundi's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Burundi had a magnitude of 4.4. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Burundi has had 2 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Burundi is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Africa. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
