Seismic Overview

Burundi is one of the smaller countries in central Africa, but its seismic exposure is significant because it straddles the western branch of the East African Rift System. Lake Tanganyika, which forms Burundi's western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, occupies one of the deepest rift-valley lakes on Earth, sitting in a graben bounded by active normal [[fault]]s that have been extending the crust for roughly 12 million years.
