The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti and faces a similar but geographically distributed seismic hazard arising from the complex transpressional boundary between the North American and Caribbean plates. Two major left-lateral strike-slip fault zones dominate the seismic landscape: the Septentrional Fault, running east-west along the northern coastal plain through the Cibao Valley, and the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault Zone (EPGFZ), which traverses the southern peninsula. The 2010 Haiti earthquake (magnitude 7.0) caused severe damage in the Dominican Republic's southwestern border region and was felt throughout the country, though damage on the Dominican side was far less severe than in Haiti owing to different construction standards and building stock. The Dominican Republic's topography is more varied than Haiti's, with several mountain ranges including the Cordillera Central reaching nearly 3,100 metres, and broad fertile valleys that serve as the country's agricultural heartland. The Enriquillo Rift Valley — actually a pull-apart basin formed within the left-lateral fault system — runs west into Haiti and continues as a structural depression hosting several lakes including Lago Enriquillo. This valley marks the surface expression of the EPGFZ.
