Bulgaria experiences moderate-to-high seismicity arising from the complex interaction of several tectonic units: the Rhodope metamorphic complex, the Balkan fold belt (Stara Planina range), the Thracian Basin, and the Sofia graben system. The country's seismicity is not concentrated along a single plate boundary but rather distributed across a network of active normal and strike-slip [[fault]] systems associated with the post-orogenic extension of the Aegean-Anatolian tectonic domain. The Sofia region, the Plovdiv area, the Upper Thracian lowlands, and the Black Sea coast all represent zones of elevated earthquake frequency. Most earthquakes occur at shallow to intermediate crustal depths of 5–30 km, and [[magnitude]] 5–6 events occur several times per decade.

Bulgaria's most catastrophic earthquake in recent history was the 1928 Plovdiv sequence, comprising two major shocks on April 14 and 18 with [[magnitude|magnitudes]] of approximately 6.8 and 7.0. Together they killed more than 100 people, injured thousands, and caused massive destruction across the Plovdiv, Chirpan, and Stara Zagora districts. Earlier, the 1818 Vidin earthquake (M ~6.4) devastated the northwestern Danube region. The 1904 Krupnik earthquake (M 7.1) in southwestern Bulgaria near the Greek border was one of the strongest Balkan earthquakes of the 20th century's first decade, felt across a wide area. More recently, the 2012 Pernik earthquake (M 5.6) caused structural damage near Sofia and renewed public attention to urban seismic vulnerability.

Geologically, Bulgaria occupies the northern margin of the Aegean extensional province, where the crust is stretching and thinning as the Anatolian block moves westward relative to Eurasia. This extension creates a system of grabens and half-grabens whose bounding normal faults are the primary [[seismic-wave|seismic]] sources. The Sofia graben is a classic example: a north-trending extensional basin whose western and eastern bounding faults have generated multiple damaging events. Bulgaria has developed national seismic hazard maps and enforces Eurocode 8 provisions, but a significant fraction of the existing building stock predates modern standards and remains highly vulnerable to moderate shaking.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Bulgaria

Bulgaria has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 2 earthquakes have been recorded in Bulgaria's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Bulgaria had a magnitude of 4.7. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Bulgaria has had 2 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Bulgaria is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.

Bulgaria
