Finland occupies the core of the Fennoscandian shield, ancient Precambrian crystalline crust that has been tectonically quiet for billions of years. The country experiences very low natural seismicity: the strongest instrumentally recorded Finnish earthquakes have reached approximately [[magnitude]] 4.0–4.5, concentrated in the Gulf of Bothnia and along a few ancient basement shear zones. Felt earthquakes are uncommon but not unknown — perhaps a handful per year across the country — and the majority go unnoticed by the general public.

The dominant driver of Finnish micro-seismicity is postglacial rebound: Scandinavia continues to rise at up to 8 mm per year in northern Finland as it recovers from the load of the last ice sheet (Weichselian glaciation), and this adjustment generates very small earthquakes on ancient [[fault]] planes. Paleoseismic investigations have revealed evidence of large (M 7+) postglacial earthquakes that occurred shortly after deglaciation roughly 10,000 years ago, when the rapid removal of ice load allowed faults to rupture catastrophically. These events are not expected to recur with similar magnitude in the current epoch. Finland's seismic hazard is negligible, and the country applies no seismic design provisions for ordinary buildings.
