The French Southern and Antarctic Lands (Terres australes et antarctiques françaises, TAAF) encompass several widely separated island groups in the southern Indian Ocean: the Kerguelen Islands, Crozet Islands, Amsterdam Island, Saint Paul Island, and the Scattered Islands. These territories collectively span an enormous area of the southern Indian Ocean on the Indo-Australian Plate, generally situated away from active plate boundaries and experiencing low to moderate seismicity from distant ridge systems and occasional intraplate activity. Amsterdam Island and Saint Paul Island sit on the Saint Paul Fracture Zone and Amsterdam-Saint Paul Plateau, a zone of the Indian Ocean characterised by modest seismicity from transform fault activity. The Kerguelen Islands sit on the Kerguelen Plateau — the same vast oceanic igneous plateau associated with Heard Island — and experience minor seismicity from the surrounding Indian Ocean ridge system. The Prince Edward Fracture Zone and other transforms near the Crozet Islands generate occasional moderate earthquakes in the region.

The seismic record for the TAAF territories is primarily known through global seismological network records rather than local monitoring, as permanent seismograph stations are limited across these remote territories. The French Polar Institute (IPEV) maintains research infrastructure on Kerguelen and Amsterdam Islands that includes some seismological observation. Moderate earthquakes in the magnitude 4–6 range from surrounding ridge segments and fracture zones are recorded several times per year in the broader region. The Central Indian Ridge and Southwest Indian Ridge systems surrounding the Crozet Islands generate the most consistent seismicity near French Southern territories. Amsterdam Island experiences low-level volcanic and hydrothermal seismicity related to residual hotspot activity, including fumaroles and thermal springs that indicate ongoing heat flow. No historically significant [[tsunami]] events affecting the TAAF territories are documented, though remote monitoring of the broader southern Indian Ocean basin records [[seismic-wave]] arrivals from all major global earthquake events.

The tectonic and geological diversity of the TAAF territories reflects the complex history of the southern Indian Ocean basin. The Kerguelen Plateau, Amsterdam-Saint Paul Plateau, and Crozet Plateau all represent different portions of the Kerguelen Hotspot track, recording the progressive movement of the Indo-Australian Plate northward over the hotspot over the past 110 million years. The oldest plateau material is now buried beneath younger ocean sediments and distant from the present hotspot location, while the currently active portion of the hotspot track is expressed at Heard Island and McDonald Islands. The fracture zones and transform faults cutting the Indian Ocean floor near the TAAF territories represent offsets in the mid-ocean ridge system that accommodate lateral differences in spreading rate between adjacent ridge segments. [[seismic-wave]]s from large global earthquakes — including great [[subduction-zone]] events from Sumatra, Chile, and Japan — are routinely recorded at scientific stations in the TAAF territories, providing valuable data for global seismological research despite the absence of local seismic hazard.

French Southern and Antarctic Lands has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in French Southern and Antarctic Lands's seismic history.

French Southern and Antarctic Lands has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

French Southern and Antarctic Lands is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Antarctica. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
