Gabon is situated on the stable Congo craton and the equatorial Atlantic passive margin, in a geological setting that produces very little natural seismicity. The country's ancient Precambrian basement formed during the Archean and Proterozoic eons and has been tectonically quiet for hundreds of millions of years. Instrumental [[seismic-wave]] monitoring shows only scattered micro-earthquakes of no engineering significance across Gabon's territory.
The Atlantic passive margin that forms Gabon's western coastline developed when South America and Africa rifted apart beginning approximately 130 million years ago. The offshore sedimentary basins of Gabon host important oil and gas fields, but the passive margin setting means that seismicity is negligible — the margin has not been tectonically active since the initial rifting phase. Occasional very low-magnitude events are detected offshore along buried transform fault structures, but these do not affect the mainland.
The Cameroon Volcanic Line, which runs northeast-southwest through Cameroon to the northwest of Gabon, could theoretically transmit some seismic influence southward, but no events clearly attributed to this volcanic chain have been recorded within Gabon. The northern border region near the Cameroon Highlands occasionally registers events detected by regional networks, but these are at or below the [[magnitude]] threshold of felt earthquakes.
Gabon's historical seismic record documents no earthquake-related damage or casualties. Building codes in Gabon do not incorporate significant earthquake provisions because the seismic hazard is so low. The primary natural hazards of concern in Gabon are flooding, forest fires, and oil industry accidents rather than tectonic events. Gabon's position on the stable African craton makes it one of the safer countries on the continent from an earthquake perspective.
