Kosovo is a landlocked territory in the western Balkans, declared independence from Serbia in 2008 though its status remains disputed internationally. The territory sits within the Dinaric Alpine fold-and-thrust belt, which was formed by the collision of the Adriatic microplate with the European platform during Cenozoic compression. This ongoing compressional tectonics makes the western Balkans a moderately active seismic region. Kosovo itself does not host the most active fault zones of the Balkans — those are concentrated along the Adriatic coast in Montenegro and Albania, and in North Macedonia and Greece to the south — but the regional stress field produces occasional moderate earthquakes in and around Kosovo.

The most seismically significant events near Kosovo in recent decades include the 1979 Montenegro earthquake (magnitude 6.9), which caused widespread damage across the western Balkans and was strongly felt in Kosovo, and the 1963 Skopje earthquake (magnitude 6.1) in North Macedonia, which destroyed much of the city of Skopje. Both events reflect the regional compressional tectonics that affect Kosovo. Within the territory itself, several low-to-moderate earthquakes have occurred near Pristina and in the Drenica region, including events of magnitude 4 to 5 that caused minor building damage.

The deep geological structure of Kosovo involves Paleozoic and Mesozoic basement rocks — including ophiolite sequences representing ancient ocean floor accreted to the European margin — overlain by Neogene basin sediments in the Kosovo Polje and other lowland basins. These sedimentary basins can amplify [[seismic-wave]]s and increase shaking [[intensity]] relative to surrounding bedrock areas. The Institute of Seismology in Pristina operates the national monitoring network. Building stock in Kosovo includes a large proportion of unreinforced masonry construction that is vulnerable to moderate shaking.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Kosovo

Kosovo has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 1 earthquakes have been recorded in Kosovo's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Kosovo had a magnitude of 4.5. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Kosovo has had 1 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Kosovo is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
