Libya's seismic environment is shaped by its position on the southern passive margin of the Mediterranean, where the northward movement of the African plate transmits compressional stress northward into the Eurasian plate along the Hellenic and Calabrian arcs. Libya itself is not on the primary collision front — that role falls to Greece, Turkey, and Italy — but the far-field effects of this convergence generate low-to-moderate seismicity in northern Libya along old basin-bounding [[fault]]s in the Sirte Basin and the Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountains) region.

The northeastern corner of Libya, including the Cyrenaica region, is most susceptible to earthquake activity. The Cyrenaica platform contains ancient Paleozoic to Mesozoic normal faults that can be reactivated under the current northeast-directed compression from the Mediterranean convergence. A significant earthquake sequence occurred in the Benghazi region in 1935, causing building damage. In 1963, an earthquake of estimated [[magnitude]] 5.5 struck near Al Bayda in the Jebel Akhdar, killing several people.

The Sirte Basin in central Libya is a major intracratonic basin that formed during Cretaceous rifting. The basin-bounding faults of the Sirte have been partially reactivated under the modern stress field, and occasional earthquakes of magnitude 4 to 5 have been recorded in this area. The southwestern desert and the interior of the Fezzan region sit on the stable Saharan platform and are essentially aseismic.

Libya was struck by a catastrophic flood disaster in September 2023 when Storm Daniel caused the collapse of two dams near Derna in Cyrenaica, killing over 10,000 people. While this was a hydrological rather than seismic event, the structural vulnerability of Derna's buildings — many of which were also compromised by the 1963 earthquake — highlighted the cumulative effect of multiple geological hazards on the Cyrenaica coast. [[seismic-wave]] monitoring infrastructure in Libya is extremely limited, and the country's seismic catalogue is poorly complete by global standards.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Libya

Libya has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Libya's seismic history.

Libya has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Libya is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Africa. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.

Libya
