Malta occupies the Pelagian Platform in the central Mediterranean, a shallow underwater plateau forming part of the Africa–Eurasia collision zone between Sicily and North Africa. The archipelago's seismicity is moderate: earthquakes occur regularly in the surrounding Sicily Channel and in the Maltese Fault Zone system, a series of NE-trending normal [[fault]] structures that bisect the islands and the shallow sea floor around them. The most significant local seismic source is the Malta Escarpment, a major tectonic boundary on the eastern side of the island where the Pelagian Platform drops steeply to the Ionian Basin. [[Magnitude]] 4–5 events in the Malta region occur every few years and are widely felt across the islands.

Malta's historical earthquake record includes several damaging events transmitted from the highly active Sicilian seismic zone. The 1693 Val di Noto earthquake (M ~7.4), centered in southeastern Sicily, caused severe damage in Malta, collapsing buildings and killing approximately 400 people — an enormous toll for the island's small population. The 1693 event remains the defining seismic catastrophe in Maltese collective memory. The 1856 Crete earthquake and associated [[tsunami]] caused wave disturbances along Maltese shores. More locally, the 1923 Malta earthquake (M 5.0) and several 20th-century events in the surrounding channel have been felt strongly across the archipelago.

The tectonic context involves the convergence of the African plate northward into Eurasia across the central Mediterranean, with the Sicily Channel acting as a zone of distributed rifting and block rotation. Malta sits at the intersection of the NE-trending Malta Fault system and the broader Pantelleria Rift system, which generated the 1891 Pantelleria earthquake (M 6.6, felt strongly in Malta) and continues to be seismically active. Malta applies Eurocode 8 seismic provisions appropriate to its moderate hazard, and national emergency planning accounts for the possibility of [[tsunami]]-generating events in the surrounding sea.

Malta has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 3 earthquakes have been recorded in Malta's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Malta had a magnitude of 5.2. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Malta has had 3 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Malta is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.

Malta
