Montenegro occupies one of the more seismically active corridors in the Balkans, straddling the boundary between the Adriatic microplate and the Dinaride thrust belt along the eastern Adriatic coast. The country's seismicity reflects the same compressional tectonics that affect Albania and Croatia: northward-moving Adriatic crust colliding with the Dinaric fold-and-thrust system, generating primarily reverse and oblique-slip earthquakes on NW-trending [[fault]] structures. The coastal zone near the Bay of Kotor and the Podgorica Basin are particularly hazardous areas. [[Magnitude]] 5–6 events occur every one to two decades, and the country has experienced some of the strongest earthquakes in Balkan history.

The 1979 Montenegro earthquake (M 7.1), centered offshore near Bar and Ulcinj, was the most catastrophic modern Balkan event in the Adriatic zone, killing 101 people, injuring nearly 1,000, and causing enormous damage along the entire Montenegrin and northern Albanian coast. Widespread destruction of stone masonry housing, tourist hotels, and historic structures (including parts of the Kotor Old Town) was documented across a large area. Earlier, the 1563 Shkodër earthquake in the border region with Albania was historically significant, and 20th-century events in 1979 were preceded by a damaging sequence in 1968.

The deeper tectonic context for Montenegro involves the convergence of the Adriatic lithospheric plate — a northward-moving fragment of the African plate — with Eurasian backstop structures of the Dinarides at approximately 3–4 mm/year. The oblique collision produces both thrust and strike-slip motion along the coastal faults, and the geometry of the Bay of Kotor — a former river valley flooded by Adriatic transgression — follows the structural grain of these fault systems. Montenegro applies seismic building standards (Eurocode 8) and operates monitoring stations as part of the regional Balkan seismic network.
