Namibia sits on the stable southern African craton and its Atlantic passive margin, in a geological setting that produces very little natural seismicity. The country's interior is underlain by the ancient Kaapvaal and Congo cratons to the east and south, and by Proterozoic mobile belt rocks in the central Damara Belt. These ancient geological terranes have been geologically inactive for hundreds of millions of years and generate only occasional micro-earthquakes.

The Damara Belt, which crosses Namibia from east to west through the centre of the country, represents a Neoproterozoic orogenic zone where ancient continental fragments were sutured together approximately 550 million years ago during the formation of Gondwana. Although this belt preserves evidence of ancient subduction and collision, its [[fault]]s have been locked since the Paleozoic and are not seismically active today.

The Atlantic passive margin to the west hosts thick sedimentary sequences in the Orange River Basin and the offshore Lüderitz and Walvis Ridge basins. These are geologically quiet features, associated only with very occasional low-magnitude intraplate earthquakes driven by old buried transform faults or sediment loading. The Walvis Ridge itself, an aseismic volcanic ridge formed by the Tristan da Cunha hotspot as the African plate moved over it, is not currently seismically active.

Occasional low-to-moderate [[seismic-wave]] events have been detected in eastern Namibia near the Botswana border, possibly related to the diffuse stress field of the Okavango Rift Zone extension. These events are rare and have not exceeded [[magnitude]] 5.0. The Namibia-Zimbabwe border region has also produced occasional low-magnitude events.

Historical earthquake records for Namibia document no significant damaging events. The country's seismic hazard is very low, and earthquake considerations are not a significant factor in building design or infrastructure planning. Mining-induced seismicity from diamond and uranium mining operations exists at a very small scale but has no regional significance.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Namibia

Namibia has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Namibia's seismic history.

Namibia has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Namibia is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Africa. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
