Poland sits primarily on the East European Platform in its eastern and central parts, and on Variscan basement in the southwest, giving it generally low natural seismicity. The most notable [[seismic-wave|seismic]] activity is induced rather than tectonic: the Upper Silesia coal-mining region centered on Katowice generates numerous mining-induced earthquakes each year, some reaching [[magnitude]] 4–4.5 and capable of causing local structural damage and injuries. The Legnica–Głogów copper mining district in Lower Silesia is another zone of significant induced seismicity. The Tatra Mountains and Outer Carpathians in the south produce occasional natural earthquakes from inherited Carpathian orogenic structures, but events rarely exceed M 4.5.
Poland's largest natural earthquake in the historical record was the 1786 Silesia earthquake (M estimated ~5.5), which caused damage in the Wrocław area. The broader Sudeten region has produced several M 4–5 events. The 1938 Bytom earthquake (M 4.7) in the mining district caused significant structural damage and casualties — illustrating the hazard posed by shallow, locally induced events beneath urban areas. Natural earthquakes from the Carpathian front occasionally generate shaking in southern Poland, particularly when events in the Slovak or Czech Carpathians are of [[magnitude]] 4–5.
Geologically, Poland's low natural hazard reflects its position far from any active plate boundary. The Outer Carpathian thrust front (the Carpathian Foredeep) marks the nearest compressional structure, but convergence rates in this sector are minimal today. The Tornquist–Teisseyre Zone — a major crustal suture dividing the East European Platform from Paleozoic Europe — crosses Poland and represents an ancient structural boundary that is no longer active. Poland applies Eurocode 8 seismic provisions with low design acceleration values across most of the country, with slightly higher values in the Carpathian region.
