Serbia occupies the transition zone between the Pannonian Basin in the north and the Dinaride fold-and-thrust belt in the south and west, creating a heterogeneous seismotectonic environment with moderate seismicity across much of the country. The most hazardous zone runs along the Dinaride front in southwestern Serbia (the Kopaonik and Raška regions), where compressional [[fault]] systems generate moderate-to-strong earthquakes. The Pannonian portion of Serbia — Vojvodina — is lower hazard but not entirely aseismic, as the Srem graben and other Pannonian structures remain active. The Vardar Zone in southern Serbia, shared with North Macedonia, adds another seismically active corridor.

Serbia's most damaging earthquake in recent decades was the 1980 Kopaonik earthquake (M 5.8), which caused damage in the Raška area. The 2010 Kragujevac earthquake sequence (ML 4.3–5.4) caused concern and some structural damage in central Serbia. Historically, the 1980 event was preceded by a 1969 Banja Luka earthquake (centered in Bosnia but felt strongly across Serbia) and multiple smaller events. The Suva Planina area near Niš has also produced damaging events. Serbia applies Eurocode 8 seismic provisions and has developed national hazard maps based on probabilistic assessment. The national seismic network is operated by the Seismological Survey of Serbia.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Serbia

Serbia is located in a high seismic risk zone, meaning earthquakes are frequent and can be destructive. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Serbia's seismic history.

Serbia has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Serbia is classified in the "High" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.

Serbia
