Sri Lanka lies on the stable southern peninsula of the Indian Plate, one of the most geologically old and rigid crustal blocks on Earth. The island has no active tectonic [[fault]] systems and has not been deformed by continental collision. The Indian Plate has been moving northward at roughly 45–50 millimetres per year for tens of millions of years, but Sri Lanka's position well south of the Himalayan collision zone means that the deformation is concentrated far to the north. The island's geology consists primarily of Precambrian crystalline basement rocks — charnockites, granulites, and gneisses — that have been tectonically stable for approximately 500 million years. Local seismicity is extremely rare and consists only of minor events too small to be felt by most residents.
Sri Lanka's most significant seismic event in modern times was not a local earthquake but the devastating [[tsunami]] generated by the December 26, 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake (magnitude 9.1). Tsunami waves 5–8 metres tall struck Sri Lanka's eastern and southern coasts, killing approximately 35,000 people — the second-highest death toll outside Indonesia. The waves arrived approximately 90 minutes after the Sumatran fault rupture, giving little time for warning or evacuation. The fishing communities of the east coast, Galle, Hambantota, and Trincomalee were most severely affected. The disaster prompted a complete reassessment of Sri Lanka's disaster preparedness, leading to the establishment of a national early warning system and updated coastal planning regulations.
The deeper geological context of Sri Lanka reflects its ancient tectonic history. The Precambrian basement is part of the eastern Gondwana supercontinent assembly, correlating with rock sequences in Madagascar, India, and Antarctica. This basement has not been significantly deformed since the Precambrian, and the overlying geology is entirely flat-lying sedimentary rock on the northern plains. The island's position at low latitude in the Indian Ocean means it is roughly equidistant from several potential [[tsunami]] source zones: the Sunda subduction zone to the east, the Makran subduction zone to the northwest, and the Carlsberg Ridge spreading centre to the west. Sri Lanka's primary seismic hazard is thus remote [[tsunami]] inundation rather than local ground shaking, and the key mitigation measures are early warning systems, coastal buffer zones, and evacuation planning.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Sri Lanka's seismic history.
Sri Lanka has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Sri Lanka is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Asia. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.

Sri Lanka
