Ukraine's seismicity is low to moderate and geographically concentrated in two distinct regions: the Crimean Peninsula and adjacent Black Sea area, and the Western Carpathians in Zakarpattia Oblast bordering Slovakia and Romania. Interior Ukraine — including much of the east, the Dnieper basin, and the steppe regions — lies on the East European Platform and is essentially aseismic.
The Crimean seismic zone arises from the collision of the Black Sea oceanic microplate with the Eurasian foreland, which drives compression along NW-trending [[fault]] systems beneath Crimea. The 1927 Yalta earthquake (M ~6.5–6.7) was the most significant modern event in this zone, causing considerable damage in Yalta and other Crimean coastal towns and triggering landslides along the mountainous coast; at least 16 people were killed. Historical records document earlier damaging earthquakes in Crimea stretching back to antiquity. The Zakarpattia zone reflects the far western influence of Carpathian tectonics, where residual compression from the arc generates shallow earthquakes of [[magnitude]] 4–5.
Ukraine also receives transmitted [[seismic-wave|seismic waves]] from the Vrancea intermediate-depth zone in Romania, which can produce moderate [[intensity|shaking]] in Odesa and the southwestern regions for large Vrancea events. The presence of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (Europe's largest) in southeastern Ukraine — in a region of low natural seismicity but significant concern under wartime conditions — has elevated the profile of seismic safety assessment in recent years. Ukraine applies seismic building code provisions for the Crimean and Carpathian zones and participates in regional European seismic monitoring.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Ukraine
Ukraine has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 1 earthquakes have been recorded in Ukraine's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Ukraine had a magnitude of 4.8. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Ukraine has had 1 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Ukraine is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.

Ukraine
