Zambia occupies the southern extension of the East African Rift System's western branch, where the Malawi Rift, the Luangwa Rift, and the Mweru Trough all converge within or near Zambia's borders. The Luangwa Valley — one of Zambia's great wildlife areas — occupies an active rift trough bounded by normal [[fault]]s, and the Lake Mweru basin along the DRC border represents another active rift feature. These structures generate occasional moderate seismicity in eastern and northern Zambia.

The Luangwa Rift is the most significant seismogenic zone within Zambia. The rift runs northeast-southwest through eastern Zambia and continues into Malawi as the Malawi Rift. Several earthquakes of [[magnitude]] 5.0 to 5.5 have been recorded in the Luangwa Valley in the modern instrumental era, and historical accounts describe occasional felt earthquakes in the Chipata and Petauke districts.

The Lake Kariba impoundment — one of the world's largest artificial reservoirs by volume, created in 1958–1959 on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border — was associated with significant reservoir-induced seismicity in the 1960s and 1970s. A magnitude 5.8 induced earthquake struck near Kariba in September 1963, causing structural damage to the Kariba Dam powerhouse. This event was among the first well-documented cases of reservoir-induced seismicity in Africa and contributed significantly to the scientific understanding of reservoir-triggered earthquakes.

The western and southern parts of Zambia sit on the Kalahari Craton and the Bangweulu Block — ancient Precambrian basement that is geologically stable. These regions experience very little natural seismicity. The Copperbelt in northern Zambia has experienced minor seismicity associated with underground copper mining, analogous to the mining-induced events in South Africa's gold fields.

[[seismic-wave]] propagation in Zambia is influenced by the varying lithospheric thickness between the rift zones and the stable craton blocks. Historical records document the 1906 Southern Rhodesia earthquake (estimated magnitude 7.3, epicenter near the Zambia-Zimbabwe border) which caused widespread felt shaking across southern Africa and may have produced permanent ground deformation along buried rift structures.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Zambia

Zambia has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 1 earthquakes have been recorded in Zambia's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Zambia had a magnitude of 4.1. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Zambia has had 1 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Zambia is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Africa. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
