The 2010 M7.0 Haiti earthquake killed over 200,000 people. Learn why the devastation was so extreme and the lessons for earthquake preparedness.

The Setting: Haiti's Seismic Vulnerability

Haiti occupies the western third of the island of Hispaniola, positioned directly above the complex boundary zone between the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates. Two major fault systems run through or near Haiti: the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone, a left-lateral running along the southern peninsula, and the Septentrional fault zone in the north. Seismologists and geologists had documented the seismic history of this region, noting that the Enriquillo fault had not produced a major earthquake in over two centuries — an ominous sign of accumulated strain. A 2008 assessment by geologist Eric Calais and colleagues at Purdue University explicitly warned that the Enriquillo fault near Port-au-Prince was capable of producing an earthquake of 7.2 or greater. The country was already the poorest in the Western Hemisphere, with a deeply fragile government infrastructure and no meaningful system.

The Earthquake: January 12, 2010

At 4:53 PM local time on January 12, 2010, the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault ruptured southwest of Port-au-Prince. was recorded at M7.0. was shallow — approximately 13 kilometers deep — meaning enormous energy reached the surface with little attenuation. was located about 25 kilometers southwest of Port-au-Prince, in one of the most densely populated areas of the country. Shaking lasted 35 seconds. ratings of VIII to IX across wide areas. At that level of shaking, poorly constructed masonry structures collapse. In Port-au-Prince, an enormous proportion of the building stock was exactly that type: informally constructed buildings, often built on steep hillsides with inadequate foundations, using low-quality concrete and substandard rebar. effects worsened the shaking in low-lying areas built on soft sediments.

The Science: Why a M7.0 Was So Deadly

A M7.0 earthquake is significant but not exceptional. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake in California was M6.9; it killed 63 people. The Kobe earthquake in Japan was M6.9; it killed 6,400 people. The Haiti earthquake killed between 100,000 and 316,000 people, with estimates varying widely due to the chaos of the aftermath. The extraordinary death toll is explained by a convergence of factors rooted in vulnerability rather than seismic intensity alone. The extreme shallowness of the maximized ground motion near the epicenter. in Port-au-Prince's low-lying districts increased shaking intensity by factors of two to three in some areas. But the dominant factor was the building stock. Haiti's construction boom since the 1980s had produced hundreds of thousands of buildings with no engineering oversight. The concrete used was often mixed with beach sand contaminated with salt, degrading its strength. Rebar was minimal or absent. Buildings frequently had multiple stories added over time without structural reinforcement. The Impact: An Unimaginable Scale

Official estimates of the death toll range from 100,000 to 316,000, making the 2010 Haiti earthquake one of the deadliest natural disasters of the modern era. Over 300,000 people were injured. Approximately 1.5 million people were left homeless, living in tent camps in the weeks that followed. The presidential palace, parliament building, supreme court, and roughly 60 percent of government and administrative buildings collapsed. Haiti lost a significant fraction of its civil servants in the earthquake, further paralyzing an already weak government. Hospitals were among the most critically damaged structures — several collapsed entirely, killing patients and medical staff. The economic damage was estimated at $7.8 billion, roughly 120 percent of Haiti's GDP. Use the Earthquake Energy Calculator to understand how the combination of shallow depth and urban proximity amplified this event's destructive potential.

The Response: Massive but Chaotic

However, the response faced enormous logistical challenges: Port-au-Prince's airport and port were damaged or overwhelmed, roads were blocked by rubble, and the collapse of the government meant there was no functional coordination structure in place. The United Nations, which had a large mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), had itself lost over 100 personnel in the earthquake, including the mission chief. Coordination failures meant that aid arrived faster than it could be distributed, with some areas receiving multiple teams while others received nothing for days. The long-term reconstruction effort, funded by billions in international donations, was also deeply troubled: by 2016, only 50,000 of the promised transitional shelters had been built, and hundreds of thousands of people remained in tent camps years after the earthquake.

The Legacy: Building Codes and Political Will

The 2010 Haiti earthquake became one of the most studied disasters in history precisely because it so starkly illustrated how enforcement — not geology — determines casualties. Seismologists pointed out that if Haiti's buildings had been constructed to even basic standards, the death toll might have been tens of thousands rather than hundreds of thousands. The earthquake catalyzed global discussions about whether post-disaster reconstruction aid should be conditional on building code adoption, and whether wealthier nations have an obligation to fund programs in highly vulnerable low-income countries. It also accelerated research into rapid-building-assessment tools that can be used by non-engineers in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. The event exposed the limits of international humanitarian response and led to significant reforms in how aid is coordinated under the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Haiti itself continued to struggle: another major earthquake struck the southern peninsula in August 2021, killing over 2,200 and demonstrating that the structural vulnerabilities exposed in 2010 had not been systematically addressed.

ShakeAlert(米国)、J-Alert(日本)、SASMEX(メキシコ)などのシステムは、数秒から数十秒の警報を提供できます。
