Tổng quan địa chấn

Djibouti sits at one of the most extraordinary tectonic crossroads on Earth — the Afar Triple Junction, where three tectonic rifts converge: the East African Rift extending southward, the Red Sea spreading centre extending northwestward, and the Gulf of Aden spreading centre extending eastward. This triple junction geometry means that Djibouti is simultaneously being stretched in multiple directions as the African (Nubian) plate, the Somalian plate, and the Arabian plate each diverge from the common meeting point. The result is one of the highest natural seismicity rates in Africa, an active volcanic province, and some of the lowest-lying terrain on Earth — the Danakil Depression and the Afar Triangle dip more than 100 metres below sea level in places.

The Gulf of Tadjoura in northern Djibouti is a young oceanic basin — an embryonic ocean in the making — bounded by active normal [[fault]]s and dotted with submarine volcanic centres. The Asal-Ghoubbet rift, which extends from the Gulf of Tadjoura inland, is one of the most actively extending rifts on land anywhere in the world, with geodetically measured extension rates of approximately 2 centimetres per year. This rift hosted a remarkable seismic-volcanic crisis in 1978, when a sequence of earthquakes including a [[magnitude]] 5.3 event preceded and accompanied a volcanic eruption from the Ardoukoba fissure in November 1978 — the first documented subaerial eruption in Djibouti in the modern era.

The Asal-Ghoubbet rift crisis of 1978 began on 7 November with a magnitude 5.3 earthquake that was felt across the country. Within hours, ground fissures had opened across the rift valley floor and a basaltic fissure eruption commenced at Ardoukoba, producing lava fountains and flows. The [[epicenter]] cluster associated with this sequence extended along the rift axis for approximately 15 kilometres. This event provided scientists with a rare opportunity to observe active continental rifting as it happened.

Historical seismicity in Djibouti includes several events of [[magnitude]] 5.0 to 6.3 along the Asal-Ghoubbet rift and the northern Gulf of Tadjoura system. A significant swarm in 1989 included multiple events above magnitude 5.0 and caused building damage in the city of Djibouti. The seismicity around Fieale caldera, a large extinct caldera in the Asal rift, suggests that residual volcanic heat still influences the subsurface stress distribution. In 2000, an earthquake sequence near the Gulf of Tadjoura reached magnitude 5.7 and triggered minor landslides on the steep scarp faces of the rift walls.

The [[seismic-wave]] patterns from Djibouti earthquakes are dominated by normal-faulting focal mechanisms, consistent with the extensional tectonic regime. Depths are predominantly shallow — typically 5 to 15 kilometres — reflecting the high geothermal gradient in this volcanic province, which means the brittle-ductile transition occurs at unusually shallow depths. This shallow seismicity can produce intense surface shaking even for moderate magnitudes, and the [[intensity]] reported by local populations during these events often exceeds what would be expected from depth-corrected attenuation models calibrated on continental interiors.

The broader geological context of Djibouti includes the Afar Depression, a region where continental crust has been stretched and thinned to such an extent that true oceanic crust has begun to form in some places — the same process that created the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden over the past 30 million years. Djibouti is therefore a living laboratory for the study of continent-to-ocean transition. The high [[seismic-wave]] activity, the presence of active volcanoes, and the extreme surface topography all reflect the ongoing birth of a new ocean in this corner of Africa. Future large-magnitude earthquakes along the Asal-Ghoubbet system are considered highly probable given the rapid strain accumulation rates.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Djibouti

Câu Hỏi Thường Gặp

Djibouti has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 1 earthquakes have been recorded in Djibouti's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Djibouti had a magnitude of 4.2. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Djibouti has had 1 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Djibouti is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Africa. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
