Greenland is the world's largest island, an autonomous territory of Denmark occupying an area of 2.17 million square kilometres, of which approximately 80 percent is permanently covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet. Tectonically, Greenland sits on the ancient Precambrian craton of the North American Plate — one of the most geologically stable regions on Earth — far from any active plate boundary. The nearest active tectonic features are the Mid-Atlantic Ridge system to the east and the convergent boundary in the Arctic to the north. Despite this apparent stability, Greenland experiences a distinctive form of low-level seismicity driven by post-glacial isostatic rebound: as the massive ice sheet continues to melt under contemporary climate warming, the underlying lithosphere rebounds upward in response to the removal of ice mass, generating slow-strain seismicity along reactivated ancient fractures. Background seismicity is minimal to low, with most events below M4.

The most significant seismic event in Greenland's modern history was not a tectonic earthquake but a catastrophic rock-ice avalanche. On 17 June 2017, a massive slope failure above Karrat Fjord in northwestern Greenland generated a [[tsunami]] with runup heights estimated at 50 to 90 metres that destroyed the village of Nuugaatsiaq, killing four people and injuring several others; the displacement wave propagated the full length of the fjord system and was recorded on ocean instruments far from the source. Seismic signals from the landslide were detected by global [[seismograph]] networks and initially misidentified as a small earthquake; reanalysis revealed the characteristic long-period surface wave signature of a massive mass movement. The event underscored that Greenland's seismic hazard is more closely linked to ice-mass loss, permafrost degradation, and steep fjord slopes than to plate boundary tectonics.

The geological setting of Greenland reflects 3.8 billion years of crustal history, from some of the world's oldest rocks in the Isua Greenstone Belt to Quaternary glacial deposits. The Greenland craton has experienced multiple Wilson cycles — complete cycles of ocean opening and closing — but has been seismically quiescent at the plate-interior scale for hundreds of millions of years. Post-glacial rebound following the last glacial maximum is ongoing, with the land surface in some areas rising at measurable GPS rates as the modern ice sheet continues to lose mass. The 2017 Nuugaatsiaq event demonstrated that climate-driven glacier retreat is destabilising steep fjord slopes previously buttressed by ice, creating a new category of geohazard for the sparsely populated coastal settlements of Greenland. The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) and collaborating international institutions maintain [[seismograph]] networks across Greenland to monitor both tectonic and non-tectonic seismic sources.

Câu Hỏi Thường Gặp

Greenland has a minimal level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 1 earthquakes have been recorded in Greenland's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Greenland had a magnitude of 4.0. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Greenland has had 1 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Greenland is classified in the "Minimal" seismic zone, located in North America. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
