Tổng quan địa chấn

Russia, spanning eleven time zones across the world's largest country, encompasses both ancient stable cratons with negligible seismicity and some of the most seismically active regions on Earth. The country's hazard geography is dramatic: European Russia west of the Urals lies on the East European Platform and is essentially aseismic, while eastern Russia — especially Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, and the southern Lake Baikal region — experiences extreme seismicity comparable to Japan and Chile. The Caucasus region in the south of European Russia (Chechnya, Dagestan, North Ossetia) adds an additional high-hazard zone driven by the Arabia–Eurasia collision.

Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands form part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the Pacific plate subducts beneath the North American and Okhotsk plates at rates of approximately 80 mm/year — one of the fastest subduction rates on Earth. This [[subduction-zone]] generates some of the world's largest earthquakes. The 1952 Kamchatka earthquake (Mw 9.0) was the third largest earthquake of the 20th century, generating a major trans-Pacific [[tsunami]] that killed hundreds in Hawaii. The 1994 Kuril Islands earthquake (Mw 8.3) and the 2006 and 2007 Kuril earthquakes (both Mw ~8.3) generated [[tsunami|tsunamis]] that affected Japan and were detected globally. Kamchatka's subduction zone is capable of generating Mw 9+ megathrust events, and paleoseismic evidence confirms such events have occurred repeatedly over geological time.

Sakhalin Island, positioned above the subducting Pacific plate, has produced catastrophic shallow crustal earthquakes. The 1995 Neftegorsk earthquake (Mw 7.1) struck at night on May 28, destroying 80% of the town of Neftegorsk and killing 2,040 people — nearly two-thirds of the town's population. It remains one of the deadliest Russian earthquakes in the modern era and exposed the extreme vulnerability of Soviet-era prefabricated concrete construction (Khrushchev-era panel buildings) to strong ground shaking.

The Lake Baikal region in Siberia is the site of the Baikal Rift System — one of the world's active continental rifts — where the Amur plate is separating from Eurasia, creating the deepest lake on Earth in an extensional basin. The rift has generated major intraplate earthquakes: the 1957 Gobi-Altai earthquake (centered partly in Mongolia, Mw 8.1) and the 1950 Assam earthquake had effects felt across the Baikal region. Within Russia proper, the 1862 Tsagan earthquake collapsed a portion of the Selenga River delta into Lake Baikal, creating the small bay of Proval. The 2008 earthquake sequence near Lake Baikal (ML 6.1) demonstrated ongoing rift activity.

The Caucasus mountain belt — shared between Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan — represents the collision front between the Arabian plate moving north and the Eurasian plate. In Russia, the North Caucasus seismic zone includes Chechnya, Ingushetia, and Dagestan, which have experienced destructive [[magnitude]] 6+ earthquakes. The 1997 North Caucasus earthquake (M 5.7) caused damage near Makhachkala. Historical records document major Caucasian events in the 18th and 19th centuries, though the political situation in parts of the region has complicated scientific access.

In terms of [[seismic-wave|seismic wave]] propagation, Russia's vast extent means that major distant earthquakes (including trans-Pacific events) are recorded by Russian networks. The Obninsk Geophysical Observatory and IRIS-affiliated Russian stations have provided decades of fundamental data for global seismology. Russia operates an extensive national seismic monitoring network (GS RAN — Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences) covering all major seismic zones. Building codes in high-hazard zones (Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Baikal) specify seismic design requirements, though the legacy of Soviet-era construction in these zones — where cost minimization and rapid deployment often overrode quality — remains a major unresolved vulnerability.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Russia

Câu Hỏi Thường Gặp

Russia has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Russia's seismic history.

Russia has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Russia is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.

An toàn động đất
