Switzerland occupies the axial zone of the European Alps, making it subject to moderate seismic hazard from Alpine fault systems on all sides. The dominant seismic source zones are the Upper Rhine Graben extending northward from Basel (an active extensional rift segment of the European Cenozoic Rift System), the subalpine thrust and fold belt along the Alpine foreland, and the Rhône Valley fault structures in Valais. The Engadin and Lugano regions in the east and south are also seismically active. Most Swiss earthquakes are shallow (5–20 km depth), and [[magnitude]] 5+ events occur roughly every 10–20 years. The country's dense urban fabric and infrastructure make even moderate earthquakes of significant economic consequence.
Switzerland's most catastrophic historical earthquake — and one of the most deadly in all of European history — was the 1356 Basel earthquake (M estimated 6.9). It destroyed the city of Basel, killing hundreds to over a thousand people, and caused widespread damage across the Upper Rhine region extending into Alsace, Baden, and Switzerland. The earthquake prompted significant reconstruction, and evidence of its destruction has been found in archaeological excavations beneath modern Basel. In the modern era, the 1946 Valais earthquake (M 6.0) killed three people and caused widespread damage in the upper Rhône valley. The 1954 Verbier earthquake (M 5.8) in the same region and the 1964 Val de Bagnes events added to the Valais seismic record. In Basel, seismically induced events recurred dramatically in 2006 when the Basel Deep Heat Mining geothermal project triggered ML 3.4 [[induced seismicity|induced earthquakes]], causing minor damage and leading to the project's cancellation — an early cautionary case study in induced [[seismic-wave|seismic]] hazard from deep drilling.
The tectonic framework involves the indentation of the Adriatic–Apulian microplate into the Alps, driving ongoing compression that is transmitted northward into the Alpine foreland and westward into the Jura fold-and-thrust belt. The Rhine Graben, cutting northward from Basel, represents the response of the northern Alpine foreland to this collision — an extensional zone that relieves compressional stresses by pulling the crust apart. Switzerland has developed one of Europe's most sophisticated national seismic hazard models (SED — Swiss Seismological Service), which forms the basis for Swiss building code seismic provisions. The SED operates an exceptionally dense seismic monitoring network and contributes cutting-edge research on seismic hazard, induced seismicity, and earthquake early warning.

Câu Hỏi Thường Gặp
Switzerland has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Switzerland's seismic history.
Switzerland has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Switzerland is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.

An toàn động đất
