Angola occupies the heart of the West African and Congo craton system, one of the oldest and most geologically stable pieces of crust on Earth. The Precambrian basement that underlies most of Angola formed between 1.8 and 3.5 billion years ago and has been tectonically quiet for hundreds of millions of years. As a result, Angola experiences very little natural seismic activity. The eastern border of Angola approaches the southern tip of the East African Rift System. Angola's recorded seismic history is sparse, reflecting both low natural hazard and limited instrumental coverage during the country's extended period of civil conflict from 1975 to 2002, which left scientific infrastructure underdeveloped. The passive Atlantic margin to the west is relatively quiet compared to active margins elsewhere — the South Atlantic spreading ridge is far offshore and produces only occasional low-magnitude events that are not felt onshore.
The tectonic setting of Angola is dominated by passive margin subsidence along the Atlantic coast, overlying thick Cretaceous sedimentary basins that formed when South America and Africa rifted apart roughly 130 million years ago. These sedimentary basins host Angola's oil fields but do not generate significant seismicity. The continental interior sits on basement rocks of the Angola Shield, which forms part of the broader Congo craton. This stable continental nucleus acts as a stress buffer, making Angola one of the lowest seismic-hazard countries on the continent.
