The Central African Republic occupies a geologically transitional zone between the stable Congo craton to the south and the more deformed rocks of the Pan-African mobile belt to the north. Despite this structural complexity, the country experiences very little instrumental seismicity, and no earthquake has caused documented casualties or significant structural damage in the country's recorded history.

Occasional low-to-moderate [[seismic-wave]] signals detected by regional networks within the Central African Republic are associated with ancient basement fault structures that were active during the Pan-African orogeny approximately 600 million years ago. These ancient [[fault]]s are mechanically locked by the cold, thick lithosphere of the African interior and are only sporadically reactivated by present-day stress. The events that do occur rarely exceed [[magnitude]] 4.5 and are typically at depths consistent with upper-crustal failures.

The northeastern part of the country lies closest to the faint seismic influence of the Sudan and South Sudan rift zones, which represent a northern extension of the East African Rift System. However, this influence diminishes rapidly southwestward across the country. The Congo Basin, which borders the south of the Central African Republic, is a vast sedimentary intracratonic basin that acts as a stress damper, further reducing the transmission of tectonic forces.

From a practical hazard standpoint, the Central African Republic has essentially no seismic risk to buildings or infrastructure. The country's geologic stability contrasts sharply with its political instability, and seismic monitoring infrastructure is extremely limited. The sparse network of regional seismograph stations operated by neighbouring countries and global agencies provides only rudimentary coverage of the country's seismicity.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Central African Republic

Central African Republic has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Central African Republic's seismic history.

Central African Republic has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Central African Republic is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Africa. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
