Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) is situated on the southern margin of the West African craton, a Precambrian continental nucleus that has been geologically stable for over a billion years. The country's bedrock consists largely of ancient granitoids, greenstone belts, and Birimian-age supracrustal sequences, none of which generate significant contemporary seismicity. Instrumental monitoring shows only scattered micro-earthquakes across the country, with no discernible spatial pattern associated with active fault systems.

The Atlantic passive margin forms Côte d'Ivoire's southern boundary. The ocean-continent transition is buried offshore beneath thick sedimentary sequences, and while ancient transform faults from the opening of the South Atlantic intersect the coastline — including the Romanche and Chain fracture zones offshore — these have been tectonically dormant for tens of millions of years. Occasional seismicity is detected offshore, but events of damaging [[magnitude]] are not recorded.

Historical seismic records for Côte d'Ivoire are sparse. One notable event is the 22 June 1939 earthquake near Man in the western highlands, which reached an estimated intensity sufficient to crack buildings. The Man area sits near a Paleoproterozoic suture zone and has shown marginally higher seismicity than the rest of the country, though events remain infrequent and small. A few low-magnitude events have been reported near Abidjan, the economic capital, though none have caused structural damage.

The [[seismic-wave]] characteristics of the rare events detected in Côte d'Ivoire are consistent with brittle failure on ancient reactivated basement faults under the ambient stress field of the African plate. The country's seismic hazard is very low, and building codes do not include significant earthquake provisions. The primary natural hazards of concern in Côte d'Ivoire are flooding and coastal erosion rather than earthquakes.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Ivory Coast's seismic history.

Ivory Coast has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Ivory Coast is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Africa. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
