Liberia lies in the heart of the West African craton, on some of the oldest and most stable rocks in Africa. The Liberian craton is one of the ancient Archean nuclei of the West African shield, with ages reaching 3.5 billion years in some basement exposures. This extreme geological antiquity is associated with cold, rigid lithosphere that does not deform readily under plate tectonic forces. As a result, Liberia experiences very low natural seismicity.
The West African passive margin forms Liberia's Atlantic coastline. This margin has been geologically inactive since the Cretaceous opening of the South Atlantic. The offshore continental shelf is overlain by thick sedimentary sequences deposited over millions of years, but these sediments are not associated with significant seismic activity. Ancient fracture zones from the South Atlantic spreading geometry intersect the coast near Liberia's latitude, but these structures have been dormant for tens of millions of years.
Historical records for Liberia document no damaging earthquake in the country's history. The regional seismograph network coverage in Liberia is sparse, limiting the ability to detect and locate even minor earthquakes with precision. [[seismic-wave]] signals occasionally detected in the area are more likely distant events from the Ghana-Togo region or the Mid-Atlantic Ridge than local sources.
No active [[fault]] systems have been mapped within Liberia's borders, and the country is not included in any regional seismic hazard zone of consequence. Liberia's natural hazards are dominated by flooding during the rainy season, disease, and the legacy of civil conflict rather than geological events. [[magnitude]] events above 4.0 are not documented within Liberia in the global earthquake catalogues.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Liberia
Liberia has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 1 earthquakes have been recorded in Liberia's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Liberia had a magnitude of 5.2. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Liberia has had 1 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Liberia is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Africa. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
