Mali is one of Africa's largest countries and one of its most seismically quiet. The country sits almost entirely within the West African craton and the Saharan platform — ancient Precambrian basement systems that have been geologically inactive for over a billion years. No active plate boundary, rift system, or active volcanic field exists within Mali's vast territory. Instrumental [[seismic-wave]] monitoring shows only scattered, very low-magnitude micro-earthquakes with no spatially coherent pattern.

The northern part of Mali, which includes the Adrar des Ifoghas highlands, contains ancient Precambrian rocks of the Tuareg Shield — a series of Precambrian terranes that assembled during the Pan-African orogeny approximately 600 million years ago. While these rocks preserve a record of ancient collision and deformation, the structures they contain are mechanically locked and no longer seismically active. The Hombori Mountains in central Mali similarly represent ancient geological structures without contemporary seismic significance.

The Niger River valley, which crosses Mali from northwest to southeast, occupies a gentle topographic depression of geological antiquity. The valley is not associated with active faulting. The sedimentary sequences within the Taoudenni Basin in northern Mali represent one of the world's largest intracratonic basins — a deep, stable depression filled with Paleozoic sediments that have never been significantly deformed since their deposition.

Historical seismic records for Mali document no earthquake-related casualties or structural damage. No event exceeding [[magnitude]] 4.5 has been recorded within Mali's borders. The country's seismic hazard is the lowest possible classification on regional and global hazard maps. Earthquake considerations play no role in Malian building design or disaster risk planning. The country's principal natural hazards are drought, desertification, and flooding from the Niger River.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Mali

Mali has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Mali's seismic history.

Mali has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Mali is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Africa. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
