The Northern Mariana Islands form an active volcanic arc chain of 15 islands extending approximately 760 kilometres northward from Guam, representing the surface expression of the actively erupting Mariana volcanic arc above the [[subduction]] of the Pacific Plate beneath the Mariana microplate. Unlike Guam to the south — which sits on the fore-arc ridge between the trench and the active arc — the Northern Marianas sit directly on the volcanic arc itself, giving them a fundamentally different and in some respects more complex tectonic exposure. The islands from Saipan and Tinian in the south to Farallon de Pajaros and Uracas in the far north represent both dormant older arc volcanoes and actively erupting current volcanic centres. The convergence of the Pacific Plate along the Mariana Trench at approximately 25 to 40 millimetres per year sustains the volcanic arc and generates both interface and intraslab earthquakes throughout the depth range from 0 to over 600 kilometres within the Pacific slab. [[subduction]] here is among the oldest and most continuous of any arc system in the Pacific.

The Northern Mariana Islands region has an extensive history of significant earthquakes. The 11 October 1993 Mariana earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 7.8) caused felt shaking across the southern islands. The 2 April 2001 Mariana Islands earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 7.1) occurred at shallow depth and was widely felt on Saipan. On 24 November 1977, a [[moment-magnitude]] 7.8 deep earthquake struck within the subducting slab below the central Marianas. Multiple volcanic eruptions on Anatahan (most notably the 2003–2008 sequence) were accompanied by intense volcano-tectonic earthquake swarms felt on nearby islands. The 2016 Uracas submarine volcanic event generated a seismic swarm. The Mariana arc region as a whole has produced numerous earthquakes in the range of [[moment-magnitude]] 6.0 to 7.5 in the past century, reflecting the near-continuous seismic activity of an active subduction arc. Deep Mariana slab earthquakes at 300–600 kilometres depth are routinely recorded on global [[seismograph]] networks.

The tectonic architecture of the Northern Marianas reflects 50 million years of Pacific Plate [[subduction]] at the world's deepest trench. The Mariana volcanic arc is built on the remnant arc of the West Mariana Ridge, separated from the active arc by back-arc spreading in the Mariana Trough — one of the most actively extending back-arc basins in the Pacific. The Pacific slab descends steeply (60 to 70 degrees) and continuously through the mantle, creating a Wadati-Benioff seismic zone extending to depths near 700 kilometres. The steep slab geometry generates deep intraslab earthquakes at all depth intervals. The [[epicenter]] of the 1993 Guam earthquake was within the same slab system. The convergence velocity in the Mariana system is moderate, meaning coupling on the interface is generally weaker than at the fastest-converging arcs, potentially limiting the maximum interface [[magnitude]] compared to systems like Tonga or Sumatra. [[tsunami]] hazard for the Northern Marianas is significant from both local interface events and from distant sources in the broader Pacific.
