Sao Tome and Principe is a small island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, located approximately 300 kilometres off the coast of Gabon. The two main islands, along with the smaller islets of Caroço, Pedras, and Tinhosas, are all of volcanic origin, forming the southwestern continuation of the Cameroon Volcanic Line. This volcanic chain extends from the Cameroon interior across the gulf as a series of oceanic islands, with Sao Tome and Principe being its southernmost and oldest members.
Like other members of the Cameroon Volcanic Line, Sao Tome and Principe are not located on a traditional plate boundary. Their volcanism is attributed to either a mantle hotspot or deep-seated lithospheric fractures beneath the African plate. The islands show evidence of historical volcanic activity — particularly Pico de Sao Tome (2,024 m) — though no eruption has been documented in the modern era of European habitation beginning in the 15th century.
Occasional low-to-moderate [[seismic-wave]] events are detected in the Sao Tome-Principe area, associated either with residual volcanic intrusive activity, settling of the volcanic edifices, or tectonic events along fracture zones in the oceanic crust beneath the Gulf of Guinea. [[magnitude]] events above 4.5 are rare. No earthquake has caused significant casualties or structural damage on the islands in recorded history.
The geological setting involves thick oceanic crust of the African plate, overlain by the volcanic edifices built up by hotspot or plume-related magmatism over tens of millions of years. The ocean depth around Sao Tome and Principe reaches 3,000 metres, and the islands rise steeply from the seafloor. While local volcanic [[tsunami]] generation is theoretically possible from major flank collapse events, no such event has occurred in the historical period.

São Tomé and Príncipe has a minimal level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in São Tomé and Príncipe's seismic history.
São Tomé and Príncipe has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
São Tomé and Príncipe is classified in the "Minimal" seismic zone, located in Africa. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
