Svalbard and Jan Mayen is a Norwegian territory comprising two geographically separate areas in the Arctic and North Atlantic. Svalbard is an Arctic archipelago approximately 650 kilometres north of mainland Norway, sitting on the Barents Sea continental shelf. Jan Mayen is a volcanic island in the North Atlantic, approximately 550 kilometres northeast of Iceland, sitting directly on the Jan Mayen Fracture Zone — an active transform fault that intersects the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. These two areas have very different seismic characters.

Jan Mayen is seismically and volcanically active. It sits at the junction of the Jan Mayen Ridge and the Mohns Ridge spreading centre, and the island hosts Beerenberg — at 2,277 metres, the northernmost active volcano on Earth and a stratovolcano that has erupted several times in recorded history, most recently in 1985. [[seismic-wave]] swarms accompany volcanic unrest, and moderate earthquakes associated with ridge tectonics and transform faulting occur regularly. The [[fault]] system of the Jan Mayen Fracture Zone produces strike-slip earthquakes of magnitude 5 to 6 on a multi-year recurrence.

Svalbard's seismic setting is different: the archipelago sits on the passive margin of the Barents Sea, but is also influenced by the active Knipovich Ridge to the west — a slow-spreading ridge segment that is the northernmost extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Occasional earthquakes of magnitude 4 to 5 occur in the region. The rebound from deglaciation following the last ice age also contributes ongoing glacio-isostatic seismicity across the Svalbard region. The islands experience no significant volcanic activity. NORSAR and the Norwegian national network monitor seismicity across both areas. Ice-induced microseismicity is a distinct additional signal at Svalbard [[seismograph]] stations.

Svalbard and Jan Mayen has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 1 earthquakes have been recorded in Svalbard and Jan Mayen's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Svalbard and Jan Mayen had a magnitude of 4.4. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Svalbard and Jan Mayen has had 1 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Svalbard and Jan Mayen is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
