Seismic Overview
Croatia straddles the boundary between the Adriatic microplate and the Dinaride thrust belt, making it one of the more seismically active countries in the central Mediterranean. The country's seismic source zones run in a northwest-to-southeast orientation parallel to the Dinaric Alps, reflecting compressional tectonics driven by the northward push of the Adriatic plate into Eurasia. Key [[fault]] systems include the Petrinja–Pokupsko fault zone in the Sisak region, the Medvednica fault north of Zagreb, and the Dubrovnik offshore fault zone along the Dalmatian coast. Widespread destruction of unreinforced masonry structures and the near-total demolition of Petrinja's historic town center underscored the vulnerability of rural Croatian housing stock. Just one day before Petrinja, a M 5.2 foreshock had already damaged buildings in the area. Earlier, the 22 March 2020 Zagreb earthquake (M 5.5) struck the capital, injuring 27 people, damaging the cathedral, and causing the collapse of numerous chimneys and facades in the city center. Historically, the 1880 Zagreb earthquake (M ~6.3) was the most destructive to affect the capital, severely damaging hundreds of buildings and remaining a landmark event in Croatian seismic history.
The Adriatic microplate, a thinned and fractured fragment of the African plate, moves northeastward at roughly 3 mm/year relative to Eurasia, loading the Dinaric fault systems with compressional stress. Croatia lies at the critical transition zone where this compression is at its most intense, producing the highest seismic hazard values in the country along the coastal hinterland and the Kupa River valley. Reconstruction after the 2020 earthquake prompted significant debate about building standards, and Croatia has accelerated enforcement of Eurocode 8 provisions for new construction while deploying European Union funds for seismic retrofitting of public buildings.
