Seismic Overview

Zimbabwe sits on the Zimbabwe craton, one of the ancient Archean nuclei of the African continent, with basement ages ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 billion years. This ancient, rigid block of lithosphere has been tectonically stable for an extraordinarily long time and produces very little natural seismicity. The Zimbabwe craton is bounded to the north and west by younger mobile belt rocks of the Magondi and Irumide belts, and to the south by the Limpopo Belt — an ancient high-grade metamorphic terrain formed during collision of the Zimbabwe and Kaapvaal cratons approximately 2 billion years ago.

The Great Dyke, a world-renowned geological feature that bisects Zimbabwe from north to south, is a linear intrusion of mafic and ultramafic rocks emplaced approximately 2.5 billion years ago. This ancient intrusion is not seismically active, despite its striking linear form that might superficially resemble a fault zone.

The most significant seismic exposure in Zimbabwe comes from the Lake Kariba reservoir on the Zambezi River along the Zambia-Zimbabwe border. Reservoir-induced seismicity from Kariba's impoundment in the late 1950s included events felt across the region. A major earthquake in 1963 (magnitude 5.8) was associated with the reservoir loading, and ongoing micro-seismicity near the dam structure has been monitored by the Zambezi River Authority.

Occasional moderate earthquakes occur in western Zimbabwe, possibly associated with ancient fault structures in the Kalahari-Zimbabwe boundary zone. A magnitude 5.2 earthquake in February 2006 near Hwange caused minor felt shaking across western Zimbabwe and eastern Botswana. [[seismic-wave]] signals from moderate Botswana events — including the 2017 Moiyabana magnitude 6.5 earthquake — are often felt across Zimbabwe.

Historical records document no major natural earthquake disaster in Zimbabwe. The country's seismic hazard is very low except near the Kariba reservoir, and earthquake design is not a standard requirement in building construction.
