Overview
An estimated 242,769 people died when a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the industrial city of Tangshan in northeastern China during the summer of 1976. The rupture broke a shallow crustal fault beneath a densely built urban area, and beyond the recorded deaths it left some 799,000 injured; property losses reached roughly 5.6 billion dollars. Shaking of Mercalli intensity XI leveled much of the city within seconds. Occurring within a complex intraplate seismic region far from any plate boundary, Tangshan stands among the most destructive earthquakes of the twentieth century and reshaped Chinese approaches to seismic preparedness and building codes.
