Overview
The northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz was struck in 1727 by an earthquake linked to roughly 77,000 deaths and shaking of Mercalli intensity VIII. No instrumental magnitude was recorded for the event. Tabriz lies on the Iranian plateau's Arabia–Eurasia collision zone, laced with active faults that have repeatedly leveled the city over its long history. This was one of several catastrophic earthquakes to strike the trading center across the centuries, part of a recurring pattern of destruction and rebuilding that makes Tabriz a focal point in the study of Iranian seismic hazard.
