On 20 July 1859 an earthquake was recorded at Lonthor, one of the Banda Islands in eastern Indonesia, at 4.6 S, 129.9 E. The entry carries no magnitude, focal depth, or intensity rating, and no casualty or damage figures. The Banda group sits inside the Banda Arc, a tightly curved subduction system where the Australian plate meets a mosaic of small plates, producing both shallow and exceptionally deep earthquakes within a compact area. Lonthor, also called Banda Besar, was the centre of the Dutch nutmeg monopoly, and the colonial administration's presence is the reason a nineteenth-century felt report from so remote an island entered the record at all.
