Overview
Magnitude 7.2 and shallow, the earthquake that struck Ashgabat in October 1948 destroyed the Turkmen capital and killed an estimated 110,000 people, reaching Mercalli intensity X. Recorded property losses came to about 25 million dollars. The rupture broke crustal faults along the tectonic front north of the Kopet Dag mountains, where the collision between the Arabian and Eurasian plates deforms Central Asia. Occurring at night with little warning, the shock left the low-rise adobe city almost entirely in ruins; its scale was long obscured by official secrecy and only later fully acknowledged in the seismic record.
